Day 1


Land in the Bilbao Airport, and take a private transfer to San Sebastián in Basque Country, one of the world’s top gastronomic destinations. Check into your chic hotel.

San Sebastián 

Walk through sophisticated San Sebastián, discovering beaches, promenades, and Belle Époque architecture with the group. Sit down for a welcome dinner of traditional Basque cuisine and wine at a restaurant with one of the top five best wine cellars in the world — over 80,000 bottles full.

Day 2


Travel to the scenic fishing village of Getaria today. Tour one of the oldest wineries in the area, and sip txakoli wine. Discover Getaria’s fresh fish during lunch on your own. Explore the Balenciaga Museum, and learn how to prepare traditional Cantabrian anchovies in oil during a workshop.

Old Town, San Sebastián

Return to San Sebastián for an evening pintxos crawl through Old Town, the city’s social center. Listen as our guide shares the history of Basque gastronomy. Join together for rounds of pintxos and drinks at our favorite bars with our cuadrilla (a Basque term for a group of close friends).

Day 3


Smell the salty air on a ferry ride to Pasaia, the little port town where Lafayette set sail for America. Experience Pasaia’s seafaring history at the shipyard museum whose permanent exhibit features a wooden whaling ship built in the 16th century, along with other historical wooden boats.


Relax during a drive along the ridge of Mount Jaizkibel to Hondarribia, a walled medieval village topped with a 10th century fortress. Learn about this town’s tumultuous history on your way to a lunch of regional specialties. Wander the cobblestone streets of the ancient neighborhoods after.

Day 4

Saint Jean de Luz

Cross the border to French Basque Country and explore Saint Jean de Luz. Watch how chocolates and macarons are made in a behind-the-scenes tour of a chocolaterie. Wander around the outdoor market, full of fresh oysters and Ossau-Iraty cheese. Savor a traditional French lunch.


Journey to the capital of French Basque Country — Bayonne. Navigate over bridges and along narrow streets lined with 16th-century mansions, boutiques, florists, and chocolate shops. Return to San Sebastián to explore restaurants, pintxo bars, and cider houses at your leisure.

Day 5

Food Market, San Sebastián

Start the day at San Sebastián’s traditional market in Old Town. Stroll among the farm stands full of fresh fish, produce, and Iberian ham. Enter a txokos (secret gastronomic society), a rare invitation for a non-native. Prepare a four-course meal in the private club.

After crafting your own lunch during the cooking workshop, enjoy time to relax in town. Get dressed up this evening for dinner at a popular wine bar featuring modern design, an extensive wine collection, and creative Basque dishes.

Day 6

Rioja Alavesa

Check out early to journey south to Rioja Alavesa whose high altitude and rich soil create one of the best wine producing areas of Spain. Explore a legendary winery, privately guided by their expert wine staff. End this visit with a wine tasting and lunch of roast lamb and other specialties.


Head on to the hilltop village of Laguardia, an ancient city founded in 1164 that houses an underground network of interconnected wine cellars. Enjoy a walk through the well-preserved city where cars aren’t allowed. Reach our hotel, a chic gourmet retreat set in the rural mountain town.

Day 7

Santo Domingo de la Calzada

Savor breakfast, then head to the village of Santo Domingo de la Calzada — a vital stop on the medieval pilgrimage route to Santiago. Meander through the network of medieval streets, declared a National Historic Interest Site, and tour the Cathedral and Pilgrims’ Hospital.


Stop in the town of Haro next, and unwind at the renowned R. Lopez de Heredia Viña Tondonia Winery. Spend time with the charismatic winemaker, touring the striking bodega and vineyards and enjoy lunch at the winery. Return to our hotel for a farewell dinner full of camaraderie.

Day 8


Finish your final breakfast in Basque Country, and check out of the hotel. Visit the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao before heading on to the Bilbao Airport for departures home. Ondo ibili!

Day 8

Travel to Barcelona and check into your hotel. Meet your local guide for a walking tour of Ciutat Vella — Barcelona’s “old city.” The district features a stunning display of Romanesque churches and beautifully preserved Gothic architecture. Weave in and out of narrow streets and squares that make up the Gothic Quarter’s labyrinthine layout.

Day 9

Spend the morning discovering the work of Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. Learn about the Catalan Modernism movement while visiting some of Gaudí’s most iconic works. Head to the still incomplete Sagrada Família — the visionary architect’s masterpiece and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Taste your way through Barcelona on a guided tapas tour this evening.

Day 10

Explore the treasures of Barcelona at your own pace this morning. Stroll down La Rambla, a tree-lined pedestrian street in central Barcelona that’s great for shopping and sightseeing. In the afternoon, head to Barceloneta and meet a biologist at the fishing port to learn about local fishing traditions. See the arrival of the boats and watch the wholesale fish auction. Savor a dinner of Catalan dishes this evening.

Savor your last breakfast in Spain, then take a private transfer to the Barcelona-El Prat Airport for flights home.

Activity Level

This trip has been designed to include daily exploratory walks that range from one to three hours. Guests should feel comfortable meandering along cobbled surfaces, walking up and down stairs, and sauntering down uneven nature paths.
